Drawing 101: Demon + Angel Wing [Ioji's Wings]
3:31:00 PMThis is actually for one of my characters from a story I'm working on.
The purpose of it is more for a study than an actual showcase for the character's design.
I had a brainstorming session with my artist [pfft okay kidding... My best friend].
We were trying to figure out what kind of wings we should give him.
We've thought of all the typical half pair wings, [where one side is a devil's and the other an angel's] or the fallen angel types [which is technically classified as angel's wings... The feathers are just grey].
And whaddya know! She suddenly came up with something... 'Why not mix them?"
The initial thought about the design came out WAY too odd for her to comprehend and she immediately regretted suggesting it XD
But with the idea of not wanting to set myself on the classic/traditional/stereotypical(?), I took the suggestion and challenged myself.
2) After I penned in the bone structure with red ink, I began with the fingers. Left the thumb as is and webbed the skin to give it sections. Makes it easier for me to work with.
3) I used an anatomy reference for the feathering. Drew lines to represent the rachis of the feathers. Gave me a rough number of feathers I can fit in each space between the fingers.
4) The meticulous work starts here. I have no idea why I started from the bottom-up when the logical way to work is with the flow of the growth of feathers in real life. But anyway...
5) Flight feathers have different widths on both sides of the rachis. It's thinner on one side. These are the primaries.
6) Moving on, I worked on the secondaries. Same technique but I made sure the feather tips got rounder nearing to the joint where the wings should be attached. I left it blank for the time being...
7) Getting the hang of drawing the feathers, I drew the primary and secondary coverts in one go. I also did the alula [can't really see it] and marginal coverts [the grey fluff huehue] and their feathers [they were more squarish]. Also drawn in the blank space with feathers with the design of the marginal coverts [square and cute :3]
8) Finally, I erased the lines and did a few adjustments for the primary coverts. I found them too short. I also added another row on top of the ones near the joint for volume [having just a row of feathers isn't logical to me either...]
P.S. The bones are actually covered. This is anatomical so I can picture better how it folds and move if it were to be in flight... except for the single section on the right. That bone is partially exposed on the front. Have you ever seen creatures with wings that are just bones?
I did not draw the under surface of the wing since the design would be pretty similar.
